Cydia for Mac Apps Coming to OS X “Within Weeks”

Creator of the Cydia app store for jailbroken iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch has just confirmed during the 360|MacDev conference that a Mac version of Cydia will be coming to Mac OS X “within weeks. Jay “saurik” Freeman is working now on the store that is expected to rival Apple’s own Mac App Store slated to launch by the end of January.
The Cydia app store for iOS devices currently has approximately 10% of the iPhone market with around 10 million jailbroken iPhone users downloading apps from the store. However, Freeman referred to Cydia not as a competitor in the app space, but a place to extend the functionality of iOS devices.
With the Cydia store for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch providing apps and tweaks not allowed by Apple or available in the App Store, you can expect much of the same from Mac Cydia. Many developers were recently disappointed with Apple’s announcement that the Mac App Store will initially not support in-app purchases. This is certainly one thing we expect to see in the Mac Cydia store and will make for a great alternative for devs hoping to distribute their apps on a freemium revenue model.
