iPad Close to Becoming Most Popular eReader

ipad-vs-kindleSome interesting numbers came out today that shows the iPad is surprisingly becoming the number one eReader of choice.  I shouldn’t say surprising, nothing Apple does is surprising, it’s just popularity.
Anyways, according to a new study by ChangeWave show that the iPad has gained a 16% share of the eReader market.  At the same time Amazon’s Kindle has lost 15% of the market, dropping it under 50% of the eReader market share.  iPad’s overall gain in popularity gives it a credible 32% of the eReader market, and putting it in a close second place.
Coming in at third is the Sony Reader at 5% and last place is the Barnes and Noble Nook, which holds 4% of the market.  I’m more surprised that the Nook has such a small share, since it’s probably the best true eReader available.  It does have a big following in the Android community, but in the end numbers don’t lie.
The study done between August 1st and November 8th also found the following:
  • 75% of iPad and 54 percent of Kindle owners are “very satisfied.”
  • 93% of Kindle and 76 percent of iPad owners use their device to read books.
  • Users are 5 times more likely to read newspapers on the iPad than the Kindle.
  • 5% of those surveyed are “very likely” to buy an eReader in the next 90 days.
  • Of those planning to buy one, 42% are likely to buy an iPad, with 33% likely to buy a Kindle.
